Job Description:

 POSITION The Narragansett Indian Health Center (NIHC) is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant (MA). The MA has no supervisory responsibilities. Communications, interpersonal skills, detail-attentive, organizational abilities, a desire to help others, the ability to maintain confidentiality of medical information, ability to multitask, willingness to adapt to ongoing changes in a patient care environment and excellent customer service skills to identify patient employer needs and facilitating action to meet those needs will contribute to your success as a MA with the NIHC.
 

This position is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse practitioners, and nurses in delivering and ensuring excellence in patient and family care by: providing medical care, implementing and evaluating direct patient care, making clinic preparations, patient documentation, performing inventory and ordering medical supplies, ensuring equipment is cleaned and maintained per departmental protocol, and obtaining pre-authorizations as required. This position performs medical testing and treatment within scope of certification in accordance with physician's orders including, but not limited to Lab test draws, EKG's, spirometry, diabetic retinopathy exams using JVN equipment, and audiometry. Obtains appropriate patient medical history necessary to perform diagnostic procedures as ordered; completes screenings (tobacco use, depression, suicide, domestic violence etc.); assists with pharmacy duties. The medical assistant is responsible for assisting with patient care and handling clerical and environmental tasks as appropriate. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the clinical services. Performs other duties as assigned.  Work is performed under general supervision within well-defined procedures. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment and skills necessary to provide appropriate patient care.

Requirements:

EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Diploma GED; Completion of a Medical Assistant Certification program from an accredited institution or program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES); or, 2. Completion of a formal Licensed Practical Nurse medical training program and currently be licensed as a practical nurse.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a Registered or Certified Medical Assistant; Requires recent experience as a Medical Assistant; Requires knowledge of Medical Terminology; Requires current CPR or Red Cross Professional Rescuer Certification within 31 days of employment; Requires completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations, knowledge as normally obtained through graduation from an Accredited Medical Assisting Program and current credentials as a Certified Medical Assistant. Requires one year medical assistant in clinic setting; Requires experience with office medical procedures and treatments; Requires strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software; Requires exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals and to achieve understanding and acceptance; Requires the ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion; Requires basic math and problem solving skills; Requires the ability to: perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time periods; work in a team environment; and adapt to performing multiple tasks; prioritize orders.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EHR and scheduling software preferred. Additional related education and/or experience preferred. Phlebotomy experience preferred. A minimum 35 wpm typing speed preferred.
