Job Description:
Under the direction of the Vice President of Student Life or designee, the Director is responsible to manage the operations of the University's Health Services department. This includes the delivery of optimal patient care, the development and implementation of health promotion and disease prevention programs, and serving as a resource for the University community on health-related issues.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operations:

  • Coordinate compliance with applicable federal and state regulations affecting health care facilities;
  • Implement and maintain policies on immunization requirements prior to matriculation in keeping with Rhode Island law and/or American College Health Association guidelines;
  • Insure that the University health program and providers adhere to established ethical codes of practice;
  • Coordinate the scheduling of staff;
  • Coordinate physician and consultant services;
  • Coordinate the purchase and maintenance of equipment and supplies necessary to the efficient functioning of the department;
  • Prepare annual budget and other reports as needed;
  • Assist in the development of health-related institutional policies;
  • Develop and maintain a system of financial management and fiscal controls in collaboration with the Finance Department;
  • Assist in the development of health-related institutional policies; (Title IX, smoking, athletics)
  • Maintain a caring environment which responds to the developmental as well as medical needs of clients and teaches healthy living;
  • Maintain an electronic medical record system which assures client confidentiality;
  • Develop and maintain systems for ancillary care such as pharmacy and laboratory services which are accessible to clients;
  • Develop and monitor protocols for clinical care;
  • Provide a safe and sanitary environment for clients, personnel and visitors;
  • Serve as liaison with outside agencies and parents on health related issues.

Direct Patient Care:

  • Demonstrate clinical knowledge and competency in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients.  Demonstrate expertise in technical skills and exhibits sound clinical judgment;
  • Maintain and manage patients utilizing lab, x-ray and other diagnostic testing in an appropriate, cost effective manner.  Perform phlebotomy, and other lab collection to complete patient lab orders;
  • Independently prescribe and / or administer appropriate medication, corrective measures, and medical therapeutics;
  • Utilize internal/external consultations wisely and appropriately.  Coordinate with outside providers to assure for continuity of care.  Collaborate with physicians regarding complex medical problems and initiated treatment as appropriate;
  • Initiate emergency treatment of acute medical problems and consult with a collaborating physician or refer to urgent care or emergency room as appropriate;
  • Provide patient education to assure recovery and prevention of illness;
  • Conduct patient follow up may include after hours or weekend phone calls;
  • Maintain clinical documentations using electronic medical record on all patient encounters completely and in a timely manner including documentation of phone calls, prescriptions and results reporting.  Preserve and protect patients' rights of confidentiality;
  • With patient permission, communicate with family and/or other University departments such as athletics, professors, and academic support, Dean of Students and other applicable individuals/departments to assure for safe recovery and best possible timely recovery and return to academic endeavors;
  • Prioritize tasks and meets clinical objectives.  Organize and handle scheduled caseload in a timely manner;
  • Demonstrate willingness to assist colleagues/staff in difficult/overloaded situations in the interest of providing quality service to the patients and achieving harmony and good work flow in the practice.

Staff Management:

  • Promote professional competence and skill of all professionals;
  • Evaluate and implement the need for in-service training.

Program Coordination:

  • Work with the Athletic Department in addressing the health needs of student-athletes;
  • Implement and monitor an ongoing Quality Assurance Program within HS;
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Student Health Insurance Program.

Requirements:

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in Nursing or related field.

Certified Nurse Practitioner in Rhode Island

Minimum of ten years clinical experience with at least five years in a college/university environment or related field, such as adolescent, adult or internal medicine.

Three to five years' experience supervising NP, RN and administrative support staff.

CPR certification.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent knowledge of health issues affecting young adults.

Excellent knowledge of adolescent developmental issues.

Ability to function independently, to attend to detail, to work under pressure and to prioritize multiple projects.

Excellent business management skills.

Excellent personnel management skills.

Knowledge of computer software applications.

Excellent nursing skills with emphasis on physical assessment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

Certification in higher education health.

Three to five years' director level experience.

Demonstrated record of continuous professional development.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
