Williams College and Williams-Mystic, the coastal and ocean studies campus of Williams College, are pleased to announce an opening for the position of Williams-Mystic Lab Manager/Assistant Director of Student Life. This is a full-time, year-round, regular appointment reporting to the Williams-Mystic Executive Director.

The Lab Manager/Assistant Director of Student Life is a well-balanced position that requires one to manage the 8,000 square foot James T. Carlton Marine Science Center (CMSC), the Williams-Mystic vans and boat fleet, while also supporting students and science faculty in their teaching and research. In addition, this position will work collaboratively with the Williams-Mystic Deputy Director to ensure that the community living experience of Williams-Mystic students is positive and rewarding.

To fulfill its mission, Williams-Mystic exists to empower global, creative citizens while cultivating an enduring relationship with the sea. An important part of our curriculum is original research, as such, this position will maintain equipment in the CMSC to support the field and laboratory research of our students and faculty. The Lab Manager/Assistant Director of Student Life will assist with field and laboratory instruction, including transporting students to field sites by boat and car. They will help to create an open-minded, interdisciplinary academic community through experiential learning at the Mystic Seaport, along the coasts of America, and on the ocean. The Lab Manager/Assistant Director of Student Life will also be responsible for coordinating potential recreational, celebratory or voluntary activities at the Mystic Seaport or in the local community to promote the students' well-being while they are on campus. Serving as a key member of a collaborative team who will help to support a diverse group of students each semester, the Lab Manager/Assistant Director of Student Life will work closely with the Deputy Director, to monitor, evaluate and encourage positive and cohesive student community living experiences.

Qualifications
Candidates should hold a Bachelor's or an advanced degree in a marine or environmental science, or any related scientific field. Desirable candidates have a variety of laboratory and field experience, including with the equipment in the CMSC: https://mystic.williams.edu/about/research-facilities/

In addition, the position requires:

  • Strong organizational skills, and exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Interest and desire in ensuring a positive community living experience for all students.
  • Significant travel and some evening and weekend responsibilities are required
  • A valid driver's license is also required, as is the ability or willingness to learn to drive a small boat
