Laboratory Manager

Position Title Laboratory Manager
Overview
The Psychology Department of Providence College invites applications for a Research Associate Position (Laboratory Manager), funded by NIH via RI- INBRE . The Research Associate will provide research support and serve as a laboratory manager for the Neuroscience and Animal Cognition ( NAC ) Laboratory, which is comprised of Dr. Templer, a post-doctoral researcher, and approximately five undergraduate students. Due to the collaborative nature of this grant with Dr. Rebecca Burwell's laboratory Brown University, the research will primarily be conducted at Brown University but employment will be held at Providence College.

Position will be approx. 32-40 hr/week depending on successful applicant's schedule. Start-date is slightly flexible but would ideally begin in June of 2018. Position is for 1-2 years.

Essential Duties:
The successful applicant will perform research on the role of the posterior parietal cortex in top-down and bottom-up attention, memory, and social behavior in the rat.

The laboratory manager is expected to coordinate laboratory activities, organize undergraduate student involvement, employ behavioral measures of attention and memory, assist with stereotaxic brain surgery, and compile and analyze data.

If the applicant is pursuing a future in academics (e.g. doctoral work), he/she will also be given the opportunity to draft manuscripts with potential for publication.

If skilled in neuroscience the applicant may be involved with optogenetic and/or chemogenetic techniques.

Behavioral measures used include a 5-choice serial reaction time task in operant chambers, object-in-location tasks, and a sociability task.

This position is ideal for someone interested in going to graduate school in a neuroscience, psychology, or comparative psychology, or interested in beginning a career in animal research.

Employee will gain research experience by working in close collaboration with Dr. Templer, Dr. Burwell, and Dr. Heimer-McGinn (post-doctoral researcher) and the candidate will help mentor undergraduates performing research in the NAC laboratory. Marginal Duties:
1. Help place equipment and supply orders.
2. Organize laboratory meetings, travel between PC and Brown.
3. Feeding/occasional cleaning of animals in vivarium

Education and Experience Required
BA or BS in Psychology, Biology, Neuroscience or related field.

MA applicants are also strongly encouraged to apply.

Two to three years of related experience in a rodent research laboratory, preferably with behavioral neuroscience focus (undergraduate work included).

Working knowledge of excel required and knowledge of Med Associates, SPSS or R statistical packages, and Ethovision software from Noldus technologies is not required but would be extremely beneficial.

Experience with Med Associates Operant chambers is also highly preferred.

Excellent organizational skills, good writing, and data analysis skills are also ideal.
