Community Engagement/Sustainable Agriculture Coord

About TerraCorps:

TerraCorps is an AmeriCorps affiliated environmental nonprofit growing a more equitable ecosystem of people and organizations to protect and steward land for broader good. Working at the intersection of land conservation, sustainable agriculture and food justice, we seek to bridge the gap between the urban, rural and suburban land movements historically segregated by socio-economic divides. Through our generative service, training and partnership model, we cultivate future conservation leaders and offer immediate capacity support to the local organizations they serve.

About the African Alliance of Rhode Island:

AARI is a young organization with much yet to learn, design, and implement. We are committed and eager and we value collaboration, experimentation, innovation, creative thinking and curiosity. AARI has 4 key parts to its overall projects- Food-Culture-Art and Health.  Over the past ten years, AARI has developed seven urban gardens, leased six acres of land for the farmer, and sells its produce at three farmers markets. We partner with community groups, City of Providence, town of Johnston, Providence Housing Authority and Farm Fresh, Brown University, RISD and regionally with Food Solution New England, collaborates with BIPOC farmers in RI, CT and MA to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful experiences in Grow your own food initiative.

AARI has proposed the following potential project(s) for their Community Engagement Coordinator/Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator:

  1. AARI currently operates seven urban gardens in Providence and is developing Bami Farm on a leased 6.5 acres of land in the town of Johnston. The new member services will help every aspect of the urban gardens and farm operations. Tasks at the farm will include greenhouse (GH) and High Tunnel (HT)seeding, watering, weeding, transplanting, harvesting, Vegetable Wash Station (to be built), Coolbot ( to be built), packing orders ( to be developed), and volunteers, and various field work tasks. This person must be able to follow directions and serve independently on tasks from start to finish. Data collection and analysis will be needed  on growing vegetables during the season’s extension practices in Oct, through the end of December. Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills are a must. Data collection and record keeping are important. The current growers specialize in growing many African vegetables, sales and value -added products.
  2. Develop a series of events to reach new participants across our service area by collaborating with local nonprofits, libraries, schools, and hospitals.
  3. Participate in community conversation and event planning around the 21-day racial equity program- a program of FSNE.
