HVAC Technician

Job summary

Portsmouth Abbey School is a Catholic coeducational boarding high school with 350 students. It is owned by The Order of St. Benedict in RI.  The monks, who live on the property in the monastery, are a vital component of the community.  There are approximately 500 acres, 30 School buildings and faculty housing.   Under the general supervision of the Director of Facilities, the HVAC Technician is primarily responsible for HVAC maintenance of school buildings and faculty housing.  We are seeking a highly responsible and responsive technician who will plan, organize, maintain and repair all aspects of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning for the School buildings and properties. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

Summary of essential job functions

  • Performs daily monitoring, repair and preventative maintenance on critical systems.

  • Trouble shoot, install and maintain existing systems, including refrigeration equipment, water systems, HVAC.

  • Execute and document weekly inspections; repair, as necessary.

  • Create, manage, and prepare preventative maintenance schedules for all systems.

  • Diagnose problems in heating/air conditioning systems for the purpose of identifying repair and replacement needs.

  • Required to do maintenance, troubleshooting, etc. on mechanical equipment, i.e. changing filters, greasing bearings, changing belts, etc.

    • Assist, as needed, with snow removal.

  • On ½ day Saturday rotation

  • On call on occasion, as directed by the supervisor.

• Other duties assigned by the Director of Facilities.

TYPICAL LEVEL OF INTERACTION

Requires strong interaction with all School stakeholders.

Education, Skills and Abilities required:

·Associate’s degree preferred

  • Minimum 5 years-experience, preferred

  • Experience in facilities management a plus

  • Independent School experience is a plus

Supervisory Impact:

This role is not a supervisory role within the Facilities Department.

Other Skills and Abilities:

The HVAC Technician shall have excellent client service skills.

HVAC Technician must be able to operate hand tools, power tools, electrical test instruments, etc.

Other Qualifications:

Details of Staff position:

Salary:  open, 6-month probationary period, successful completion of probationary period

Full-time: minimum 40 hours per week, 5 days per week; must be available to respond to emergencies in the evening and on weekends or holidays
