Director of Veterans Affairs

Title:                Director of Veterans Affairs

Reports to:     Chief Operating Officer

Type:               Full-time/salaried

General Description:

The mission of YWCA Rhode Island is to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The Director of Veterans Affairs supports the mission of YWCA by developing internal and external relationships as well as creating and implementing new initiatives for active members of the military and veterans.

Responsibilities:

The Director of Veterans Affairs is responsible for the oversight and management of programs and services to support active members of the military and veterans. The Director of Veterans Affairs reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer.

Essential Duties:

  • Oversee internal operations of the Gateway to Independence program
  • Build and expand external relationships with relevant public service/community entities that work with Veterans
  • Identify and engage volunteers
  • Establishes and maintains linkage with support agencies and facilities  (i.e. Veterans Hospital, social service agencies, etc.)
  • Establishes linkages with other service providers to arrange for on-site workshops, trainings, etc.
  • Develop new initiatives such as job training and skill building programming
  • Establish a resource and referral service for active members of the military and veterans
  • Identify opportunities to improve quality or for growth
  • Special projects and events as assigned
  • Represent organization in community initiatives and support the mission of YWCA

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Attend scheduled meetings, staff supervision appointments and special events as assigned
  • Participate in recommended training programs
  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned by Supervisor, COO or CEO

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, Higher Education preferred
  • Military service preferred
  • Management experience required
  • CPR and First Aid Certified, recommended
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of veteran specific issues preferred
