Director of Finance and Operations

University of Rhode Island Research Foundation (URIRF), a $2 million 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation with a staff of 14 people, is currently hiring a ‪Director of Finance and Operations who has the experience and drive to take a young support organization to the next level. This is an opportunity for the right person to strengthen the internal capacity of an organization working to help grow Rhode Island’s economy by commercializing innovations, supporting the creation of technology-based start-up companies, and by providing specialized training to Rhode Island’s manufacturers and other small businesses.

The Director of Finance and Operations will have day-to-day management oversight and responsibility for all financial functions and the management of the employees’ benefits.  S/he is expected to implement systems and procedures required for effective operations and timely fiscal monitoring and reporting. The Director of Finance and Operations advises the Executive Director in all related matters, and works pro-actively with all management staff and the Board of Directors to ensure budgetary adherence, fiscal responsibility and the success of the organization.

Finance and Accounting Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and maintain the financial systems, processes and procedures (including internal controls and safeguards) needed to accurately process daily transactions, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare annual and grant budgets, administer and review financial plans and compare to actual results, identifying, explaining and reporting variances to stakeholders (i.e. Executive Director, Board of Directors, funders, the directors of Polaris Manufacturers Extension Partnership and Rhode Island Small Business Development Center, as appropriate).
  • Generate monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; communicate financial information to appropriate stakeholders (including funding agencies in the case of grant awards).
  • Regularly analyze financial data, monitoring progress and changes, and keeping appropriate stakeholders updated on the organization’s/programs’ financial status.
  • Oversee and lead banking and cash management functions, including the preparation and recording of journal entries, account reconciliation, bank deposits, and the preparation of invoices, checks, vouchers and reimbursements.
  • Prepare necessary work papers and effectively respond to our auditor’s requests to ensure a smooth audit process.

Operations Responsibilities:

  • Prepare payroll information and coordinate payroll functions with external contractor.
  • Oversee and manages employee benefits, including the tracking of vacations and sick leave, contributions to the 403(b) plan, and the maintenance of all insurance policies and accounts.
  • Oversee the maintenance of employee personnel files and manages new hire processes and procedures, as well as employee questions about their benefits.
  • Review benefit package and makes recommendations to the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • ‪A Bachelor’s degree in accounting, with a minimum of 3 years related experience and training.
  • Experience in finance, accounting and budgeting, and coordination of programs or services.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively (in particular with regard to the organization’s financial status), both verbally and in writing is required.
  • Strong and effective management competencies working with individuals and teams.
  • Proficiency with Quickbooks, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization is desirable.

Salary:

$55,000 – $75,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
