AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteer Coordinator

ORGANIZATION 

Rhode Island Free Clinic (www.rifreeclinic.org) is nationally recognized for its volunteer/community partner model. In 2013 the Clinic mobilized an active statewide corps of over 800 volunteers throughout Rhode Island – medical and support professionals along with academic, medical, and community partners – to provide nearly 9,000 patient visits and a medical home to uninsured, low-income Rhode Island adults who would otherwise have none. The Clinic seeks an outgoing, energetic, highly organized Volunteer Coordinator to serve for one year in this Americorps*VISTA position. An integral part of the Clinic’s team of eight staff and seven AmeriCorps*VISTAs, this person is responsible to contribute to developing strategies and procedures, adopting best practices, projecting the Clinic’s positive public image, and thriving in the context of the Clinic’s highly professional and personable volunteer model. This position offers a unique opportunity for a person seeking a VISTA experience in public health, community development, human resources or business development.

 

DUTIES

  • Work with the Clinic’s AmeriCorps*VISTA team to build the capacity of the Clinic’s volunteer program.

  • Recruit, train, and honor volunteers to provide health care to uninsured, working poor and low-income adults.

  • Create and enhance systems that build and sustain the volunteer program beyond VISTA term of service.

  • Identify and recruit for specific volunteer needs and activities in collaboration with other staff.

  • Coordinate and regularly update volunteer schedules including confirming volunteer shifts prior to each shift.

  • Coordinate volunteers and be available during their shifts for training, guidance, and questions.

  • Maintain and update volunteer orientation and training manual.

  • Provide training for volunteers including: medical records software, interpreting, medical reception, and administration tasks. Research best practices and successful, replicable models of volunteer program delivery.

  • Promote activities to patients and the Clinic community that build awareness and encourage participation.

  • Design and implement a volunteer feedback process.

  • Enhance internal volunteer records and ensure they are organized, up-to-date, and accessible.

  • Initiate and organize volunteer recognition activities, including annual volunteer event.

  • Build systems to assist providers with coordinating patient care.

  • Lead volunteer recruitment through community, civic, and agency groups.

  • Cultivate volunteer relationships for the Clinic.

  • Organize food program by recruiting volunteers to help with donations and ensuring food is served when needed.

  • Cross train with AmeriCorps*VISTA team to share responsibilities as necessary.

  • Commitment to the agency’s mission, volunteer model, and service to the uninsured

  • Entrepreneurial with demonstrated initiative

  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred but not required
